What is trauma?

Trauma is a response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event that overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope. Understanding the various types of trauma is essential for effective treatment.

    • Acute Trauma: Results from a single, sudden event, such as an accident or natural disaster.
    • Chronic Trauma: Stems from prolonged exposure to distressing situations, like ongoing abuse or war.
    • Complex Trauma: Arises from multiple, varied traumatic events, often beginning in childhood.
    • Cumulative Trauma: Refers to the gradual, accumulating impact of persistent stressors over time, such as ongoing financial difficulties or dysfunctional relationships.
    • Secondary Trauma: Occurs when individuals indirectly experience trauma through exposure to others’ traumatic experiences.
