What is Postpartum Depression?

Postpartum depression is a mood disorder that affects women after childbirth, characterized by feelings of sadness, anxiety, and exhaustion. It encompasses various forms such as postpartum blues, postpartum depression, and postpartum psychosis, each requiring specialized care.

    • Postpartum Blues: Commonly referred to as “baby blues,” this mild and temporary condition involves mood swings, tearfulness, and anxiety typically lasting up to two weeks after childbirth.
    • Postpartum Depression: A more severe and prolonged form of mood disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and difficulty bonding with the baby, lasting beyond the initial weeks postpartum.
    • Postpartum Psychosis: A rare but serious condition where mothers experience hallucinations, delusions, and extreme agitation within the first few weeks after childbirth, requiring immediate medical attention.

    • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Helps modify negative thought patterns and behaviors.
    • Supportive Therapy: Provides emotional support and guidance during a challenging time.
