What is Depression?

Depression is more than just feeling sad—it’s a persistent feeling of sadness or loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. Each type of depression has its own specific symptoms, duration, and treatment approaches. Understanding the various types of depression helps tailor effective treatment.

    • Major Depressive Disorder (MDD): Involves persistent feelings of sadness and loss of interest.
    • Persistent Depressive Disorder (PDD): Entails chronic depressive symptoms lasting for years.
    • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Characterized by recurrent depressive episodes during specific seasons, typically winter.
    • Bipolar Disorder (formerly known as Manic Depression): Involves cycles of depressive episodes alternating with periods of elevated mood known as mania or hypomania.
    • Psychotic Depression: Combines severe depression with psychosis, such as delusions or hallucinations.
    • Postpartum Depression: Occurs after childbirth, characterized by intense sadness, anxiety, and fatigue that may interfere with maternal-infant bonding and daily functioning.
    • Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD): A severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) that includes significant depressive symptoms during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle.
    • Atypical Depression: Features mood reactivity (being able to feel better temporarily in response to positive events), increased appetite or weight gain, excessive sleep, and sensitivity to rejection.
    • Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD): Primarily diagnosed in children and adolescents, characterized by severe and recurrent temper outbursts that are out of proportion to the situation.
